Joseph Whitt, retired Navy, served on the U.S.S. San Francisco CV-38 from 1941-1944. Joe is the only Pearl Harbor survivor living in Clermont County. Joe and the San Francisco earned 17 battle stars and the San Francisco is one of the most battled hardened ships to ever serve in naval war.  

Tommie Bixler, retired Navy, received the National Defense Service medal, Navy Expert Rifle badge, and the Good Conduct Medal during Vietnam. Mr. Bixler was recently honored by the Clermont County Veteran's Service Commission.

 

Lance Corporal Nick Erdy was honored with the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor, for the heroic actions that saved his friend, and fellow Marine Scott Bunker. Erdy pulled Bunker out of harms way after he was shot in the eye while the two were part of Operation Matador in Iraq in 2005. Lance Corporal Erdy died shortly thereafter.


Clifton Edward Snell was awarded the Navy Cross.  Mr. Cross was aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the Battle of Midway.  Mr. Snell is credited for keeping the YORKTOWN moving with enough speed to launch U.S. aircraft by keeping the boiler hot enough despite damage to the boiler room.

Elmer Tucker served in Korea and World War II with the U.S. Navy. He earned the Navy Good Combat Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Korean Service Medal.

Joseph Walriven, who served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal and Marine Corps Emblem.

 

Ralph Woodruff served in World War II with the U.S. Navy. He earned the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Medal.

 

James Carson served on the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier CV-36 Antietam, as part of a crew that manned her during the Korean War and two battle stars.
